Unit Six: The Stranger (Albert Camus)

Syllabus KEY:  Here is your syllabus for the sixth unit on Albert Camus' The Stranger  We will be covering about 2 chapters a week, and you will have question sheets you will need to answer on your outside reading.

The majority of your grade for the six weeks will come from four assignments, each worth about 100 pts:
your questions answered on the story, your literary term sheets, your group poem analyses, and your final book test.

WEEK ONE: (4/16-20): Introduction of Albert Camus, existentialism, and absurdism; questions on Myth of Sisyphus

HW: Read chapters 1-2 in The Stranger; answer the questions

WEEK TWO (4/23-27): The Stranger; Context and Conventions Worksheet; Before the Deluge Poetry Analysis in groups

HW: Read chapters 3-4 in The Stranger; answer the questions

WEEK THREE (4/30-5/4):  The Stranger; Criticism and Culture and Nature Worksheet

HW: Read chapters 5-6 in The Stranger; answer the questions

WEEK FOUR (5/7-11):  The Stranger ; Deconstruction and Denotation/Connotation Discourse; Housman's Last Poems Analysis in groups

HW: Read chapters 1-2 of Part II in The Stranger; answer the questions


WEEK FIVE (5/14-18):  The Stranger; English and Feminism Criticism Worksheet

HW: Read chapters 3-5 of Part II in The Stranger; answer the questions

WEEK SIX(5/21-25): The Stranger; Figurative Language Worksheet; EXAMS

HW: Study for final open book test on The Stranger (you will be asked to compare and contrast the novel to a poem) Focus on the contrast in the novel between the individual and society.
