I am thrilled to be at Berkeley and
feel lucky to be teaching you! I'm sure that you already know most of these
rules, but want to make sure that I am clear about them from the start.
Please let me know if you feel that there are any rules of conduct that I should
add to this list.
Be
on time
Be
polite
Respect other
people's belongings-Do not touch other students' books,
papers, notes, without their approval. Do not use books in the class
that are not yours. Do not eat in the class. Do not leave your books in the classroom. Do not plagiarize
the work of other students, authors, or the internet.
Respect other
people's feelings- This is very important to me. Do not
ridicule others indirectly or directly.
Respect me-Don't
talk while I'm talking. I respect each and every one of you- I expect
the same from you. I will be happy to listen to everything you have to
say-just be patient.
Have an open mind
even though you may have an opinion which is strongly opposed to mine
or another student's, listen before arguing. Defensiveness is not
always necessary and is sometimes a clue to the weakness of your
argument.
Don't
Ask:
When is the
period over?- when the bell rings and not before
Does this
count?-everything counts
Can we have extra credit?-
BPS English Dept. policy: no extra credit
What is my
grade? Just add together the points you've received and divide by the
total
Be
Prepared: AP should stand for "always prepared"
Bring your paper,
pencil, pens, laptop, and whatever else you need --books, handouts,
etc..-but most importantly your passion and your brain. I am intolerant of
sleepers and lazy students.
Come to class
having done your homework and reading
Oral
presentations will be given on the day they are assigned or
points will be taken off
Tests and
quizzes will be given on the day they are assigned. Asking to
postpone a test or quiz will not work unless there are
extraordinary circumstances. Coming into class on the day of
the test/quiz and saying “Gee, I can't take this because I
had a.........” is not a good technique. Better: tell me in
advance, as soon as you know that you will have the conflict.
