Important Historical Decisions

France was restored under the rule of Louis XVIII, and was deprived of all territory conquered by Napoleon.

Russia got Finland and effective control over the new kingdom of Poland (previously the Grand Duchy of Warsaw).

Prussia was given much of Saxony and important parts of Westphalia and the Rhine Province.

Britain got several strategic colonial territories (e.g., Cape Colony, South Africa), and they also gained control of the seas.  The slave trade was also condemned (at the British urging).

Austria was given back most of the territory it had lost and was also given land in Germany and Italy (Lombardia and Venitia).

Switzerland was declared neutral.

Sardinia was given Piedmont, Nice, Savoy, and Genoa.

Norway and Sweden were joined under a single ruler.

A German Confederation of 39 states (including Prussia) was created from the previous 300 and was placed under Austrian rule.

Spain was restored under Ferdinand VII.

The Two Sicilies was restored under the Bourbon Ferdinand I.

The Dutch Republic was united with the Austrian Netherlands (including Belgium) to form a single kingdom of the Netherlands under the House of Orange.

Hanover was enlarged and made into a kingdom.
Freedom of navigation was guaranteed for many of the rivers in Europe.
