Activity: You have been shipwrecked on a tropical island. Hoarding and hostility are rampant, illness is spreading, and the natives may be hostile. There is some hope of survival and rescue, but it will take effort and cooperation. You and your group must discuss the possibility of organizing to meet the needs of the greater good. What tasks need to be accomplished? Who will do them? What rules will you set up, and how will you enforce them? Will there be punishments? If so, what? Who will be your leader(s)? How will they be chosen? What powers will they have?

In pairs, read and discuss the placement of the political philosophers on the political spectrum from anarcy to dictatorship. Then read and discuss the excerpt from the Declaration of Independence, outline the document and list four fundamental beliefs that can be found either explicitly or implicitly in the document.  Where would the author of the Declaration be placed on the political spectrum? How do these beliefs conflict? How does this document reflect the views of most Americans then? Today? What does this document imply about American Political Culture?

Carousel Exercise: Students will create an anticipatory chart of their expectations of demographic determinants of political views in the United States.  They will then move around the room in groups analyzing the posted graphs and tables showing actual polling data relating political ideology to gender, region, class, education, ethnicity, and age, Groups will analyze and discuss the poll data, read other groups comments, and then post their own rationale for the outcome.

 Review for Unit 1 Assessment

 

Exercise: Students review online practice questions, and will take a 10-minute practice essay. The class will then formulate a comprehensive rubric on the board using the Correct-Complete-Connect format. Students will exchange essays, and score them using highlighters to show where points were earned. Ambiguous answers will be discussed in individual conferences.

Unit 1 Summative Assessment (SA)

This test will consist of a summative section consisting of 45 multiple choice questions worth 1 point each to becompleted in 35 minutes, and one formative 10 minute FRQ from the material and concepts in Unit 1.

Time will be called at the completion of the multiple choice section and that section will be collected; you will be expected to move on to the essay when time is called.

The test will be counted out of 50 points.

Bring:  Pencil for Unit 2 test
