"Honey,
I'm home!" called Tana as she entered the suite after another brutal
boardroom with The Donald. Craig and Kendra ran to greet her and realized
that Alex had been fired. In an interview, Kendra worried that Tana and
Craig were so close: "I feel like it's Tana and Craig against me." But
Kendra also knew that the entire landscape of the competition was about to
change.
The
next day, the three candidates met Donald at the penthouse suite of Trump
World Tower, with its incredible view of the city from 90 floors up. Trump
said that if the candidates were really successful and got the job as The
Apprentice, they might have a place like this someday. Trump told Kendra,
Tana and Craig that they would be interviewing with four of the most
respected professionals in the business world: David Brandon, Chairman &
CEO, Domino's Pizza, Inc.; Darlene Daggett, President, U.S. Commerce, QVC,
Inc.; Howard Lorber, Chairman, Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate; and
Greg Brenneman, Chairman & CEO, Burger King Corp. Trump said that based on
recommendations from the executives, someone would be fired.
The
Final Three spent all day in grueling interviews, facing each executive and
answering tough questions, including: "Which of the other candidates would
you choose to be your business partner and why?"; "Tell me about your
leadership style. What's it like working for you? Would you enjoy working
for you?"; "Who is on your enemy list?"; "Were you flying under the radar?"
and "Why should Mr. Trump hire you for this job?"
Trump
met with the business leaders to find out what they thought of his
candidates. David Brandon said that Craig talked a lot but didn't offer much
substance. He also thought that Kendra was a little too aggressive. If the
choice were his, he would hire Tana. Darlene Daggett agreed with David and
said that she would hire Tana as well. Darlene was impressed with Tana's
entrepreneurial skills and the fact that she started her first business
venture at the age of nine. Like David, Darlene said that Craig provided
little substance. As for Kendra, Darlene found her answers good but said
they felt "scripted." Howard Lorber disagreed with his two colleagues and
said that Kendra could be a "superstar." He thought that while Tana was a
nice person, he didn't think she could make it in a big city like New York.
As for Craig, Howard wasn't a fan. Greg Brenneman seemed to echo what Howard
had said. Greg felt that Kendra was aggressive and intelligent, but wondered
if Tana could be an effective leader. Greg echoed the group's concern that
Craig offered no substance in his interviews. Trump thanked the leaders for
their input and they left the room.
The
candidates, who were waiting in the lobby as the leaders discussed their
fate, entered the boardroom. Trump told Craig that the leaders felt his
answers weren't deep enough and lacked substance. They unanimously felt that
Craig should be the one to go. So, Trump wasted no time and said, "Craig,
you're fired." Craig left the boardroom and Trump Tower for the final time,
wheeling his suitcase behind him. Then, Trump congratulated Tana and Kendra
- they were the Final Two! Trump noted that he had started with nine Book
Smart and nine Street Smart candidates and now was down to one of each.
Donald sent the two women back up to the suite to enjoy the evening because
the next day he promised that he would give them "the task of all tasks."
Back
in the suite, Tana and Kendra screamed and hugged. The candidates were
welcomed back by a bottle of champagne and a photo album that chronicled
their long journey. Kendra said that she had met some crazy, colorful people
whom she would hold dear to her heart. The two women toasted with champagne,
but knew that they would soon be competing again.
The
next day, Kendra and Tana returned to the boardroom where they met Carolyn
and George. Trump made his grand entrance via a video conferencing screen.
The Donald was on a business trip and gave instructions on the go. For the
final task, Trump said Kendra would run the Best Buy Video Game World
Championship. She would be in charge of coordinating and hosting the huge
video game tournament at Webster Hall featuring the new EA Sports video game
Fight Night Round 2. Tana, Trump continued, would run the NYC2012 Athlete
Challenge - a VIP sports exhibition at the Chelsea Piers to promote New York
City's bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Trump said it was simple:
the winner of the task would become The Apprentice. Then Trump told the two
candidates that they would each get a few employees. Right on cue, six fired
candidates walked in. Kendra, the only remaining Book Smarts candidate, got
three people from the original Book Smarts team: Michael, Danny and Erin.
Tana, the only remaining Street Smarts candidate, got three people from the
original Street Smarts team: Brian, Chris and Kristen. George said that this
final battle would determine once and for all who was better - Book Smarts
or Street Smarts. Tana waited for her new employees to leave the boardroom
and then quickly asked George if there was any chance of changing the teams
around. Carolyn answered, just as quickly, "No." George explained that part
of the challenge was to deal with people you might not want to work with.
Back
up in the suite, the two bosses commiserated about their employees. Tana
called her group the "Three Stooges" while Kendra said she was challenged to
work with people who all had some degree of incompetence. Kendra admitted
that having her employees help decide her future was scary.
The
next day, Kendra met Danny, Erin and Michael at Webster Hall, the site of
her big event: the Best Buy Video Game World Championship. Kendra and her
employees got the full tour of the funky space. Kendra said that she had to
organize exactly how the tournament would be laid out in the space and plan
the schedule of the event. Kendra also knew that she needed to keep her
clients happy. Those clients were EA, the developer and publisher of Fight
Night Round 2; PlayStation, the maker of the PlayStation2 game system on
which the game would be played; and Best Buy, the electronics giant and
sponsor of the event.
At the Chelsea Piers, Tana had
her own work cut out for her. She met Chris, Brian and Kristen, whom Tana
called the "most explosive personalities that ever existed." Tana was tasked
with essentially putting together a mini Olympics - an exhibition of Olympic
athletes competing in gymnastics, track and beach volleyball. She would have
to coordinate all of the athletes and VIPs. Tana said that it would take a
team of twelve to do the job right - she had only four.
Back
at Webster Hall, executives from Best Buy and EA arrived. Danny brought them
up to a meeting area where they joined Erin; Kendra was downstairs dealing
with other matters. There seemed to be some miscommunication as Danny said
he didn't know when Kendra was going to arrive - and Kendra, for her part,
didn't know that the meeting had started. Danny asked the assembled
executives if they would mind waiting for Kendra, but he couldn't stall for
long. Danny said that Best Buy pushed him to start the meeting and so he had
no choice but to begin. Danny opened with a little jingle to warm up the
crowd, but only got a confused reaction. Then Danny launched into the
group's game plan, but he seemed to stumble along. Erin said that Danny was
"sort of scatterbrained" and couldn't communicate well. Finally, an
executive from Best Buy interrupted Danny and said that with less than 24
hours to go, he had seen no timeline or layout for the event. The executive
said that he was "concerned" that he didn't have any idea how the next day
was going to work. In an interview, Danny called the meeting a "nightmare."
Erin broke away and ran downstairs to find Kendra in a discussion about the
project. Erin got Kendra upstairs to try and salvage the meeting. Kendra
apologized and took the executives on a whirlwind tour of the facilities,
explaining how the event would work. Luckily, she seemed to turn the mood
around. An EA executive said that Kendra communicated her vision of the
event and that helped to alleviate a lot of fears just one day before the
tournament.
Tana and Carolyn shared a limo as
Chris, Brian and Kristen drove a van to the group's meeting with NYC2012.
When they arrived at the offices, Tana, Carolyn and Brian went up to the
meeting while Chris and Kristen looked… and looked for parking. The
representatives of NYC2012 gave a quick rundown on who they were and what
they wanted. They told Tana, Brian and Carolyn that they represented more
than 1,700 Olympians from 50 countries. Their goal was to bring the Summer
Olympic Games to New York. The event that Tana was in charge of at the
Chelsea Piers would involve some of their Olympians competing in events like
track, gymnastics and beach volleyball. Unfortunately, Tana was pulled out
of the meeting as the NYC2012 representatives were talking. Chris and
Kristen were calling Tana because they had been unable to find a parking
spot. Tana shot back that she didn't know New York City any better than they
did. She told them to find a spot, park and join the meeting. In an
interview, Tana was even more blunt. She said that she would have no problem
firing any of her employees if they didn't perform. Now, while Tana was out
of the meeting on the phone call, Brian began to talk about the fact that he
was a magician. Luckily, Tana stepped back in. Stuck in their van, with
nowhere to park, Kristen and Chris were frustrated. In fact, Kristen said
she didn't care if they won or lost the task. "My ass is no longer on the
line," she said.
At
Webster Hall, Kendra put all of the PlayStation2 gaming kiosks down in the
basement because she had a contractual obligation to display only games from
EA in the main ballroom. But Amy, PlayStation's representative, was not
happy at all that her company's games were stuck down in the basement. Amy
complained that their kiosks were relegated to the tiny, out-of-the way area
by the bathrooms. Amy told Kendra that she looked forward to seeing what
Kendra could do with the space overnight. In an interview, Amy laid it on
the line. She said that Kendra hadn't done anything to make their area cool
or give it a PlayStation feel. Amy warned that if the situation wasn't
rectified, there was a distinct possibility that PlayStation would pull out
of the event entirely.
